“Opportunities wait for those who are willing to take a leap of faith.”
At The Matthew 25 Project, we often say that every child deserves safety, stability, and the opportunity to dream. Njabulo’s story is a living testimony to what becomes possible when faith, community, and practical support come together.
Now 19 and thriving in his first year at university, Njabulo’s journey to success was anything but easy.
A Season of Instability
During 2021 and 2022, Njabulo and his mother moved frequently, changing schools multiple times. Stability felt out of reach.
At the beginning of 2023, he enrolled in Grade 10 at St Dunstan’s College in Benoni. Though initially an average student, he quickly immersed himself in school life, becoming an active contributor to the school newspaper and serving on the spirituality committee.
For a moment, it seemed like life was settling.
But then his mother became seriously ill and bedridden. Despite his prayers for her healing, her health continued to decline, and the family decided she should relocate to Mpumalanga for care.
Suddenly, Njabulo was on his own.
For three months, he did everything he could to maintain school attendance while trying to manage alone. Letters warning of unpaid school fees began arriving. Fear of losing yet another school and yet another chance at stability weighed heavily on him.
He withdrew, keeping a low profile and hoping not to draw attention.
A Scripture That Changed Everything
As part of the spirituality committee, Njabulo was scheduled to lead a morning scripture reading and prayer during assembly.
Filled with anxiety, he worried that stepping forward might expose his circumstances.
He prayed for guidance.
That morning, he opened his Bible and read from Matthew 25.
After assembly, the school rector called him into his office. With little choice but to be honest, Njabulo shared everything.
That moment changed his life.
He was placed in the care of Carol and Garry Foster, founders of The Matthew 25 Project. They welcomed him into their foster home — not only providing a safe place to stay, but ensuring he could remain in school and complete his education.
Support That Builds Futures
With stability restored, Njabulo began to flourish.
In the safe and nurturing environment of The Matthew 25 Project foster home, he regained focus and confidence. He excelled academically, earned his full colours, and achieved the highest marks in mathematics.
Two of his written works were published internationally in AuVert magazine under the pseudonym Heusque Foster. He was also awarded the prestigious Bishop’s Award — presented to students who demonstrate exceptional resilience in the face of hardship.
“I have not had a fairy-tale childhood,” Njabulo reflects, “but I have learnt that human beings are resilient. You need to keep your head up, face each challenge, and will yourself to rise above to achieve your goals. If you remain focused and trust in God, nothing is impossible.”
Thriving at University
Today, Njabulo is ranked among the top ten academic achievers in his university residence of 1 000 students.
He encourages matriculants preparing for their final exams not to let stress and anxiety overshadow their potential.
“The looming final exams are the launch pad to your future. They are not the end of a chapter but the foundation for what you can achieve,” he says.
He emphasises the importance of balance and self-care:
“Get enough sleep, maintain a healthy diet, exercise, and surround yourself with people who support your dreams. Preparation and balance will help you face every paper with confidence.”
Currently pursuing legal studies, he has not yet chosen a specific field, though family law interests him deeply. Alongside his academic journey, he continues to invest time in theological studies.
The Heart of The Matthew 25 Project
Njabulo’s story is not just about individual success. It is about what happens when a vulnerable child is given:
- A safe home
- Consistent care
- Educational support
- Emotional encouragement
- Faith-centred guidance
At The Matthew 25 Project, we believe that no child is beyond hope. With the right support, resilience can turn into achievement — and uncertainty can become purpose.
Njabulo was once navigating life alone.
Today, he is thriving, studying law, and inspiring others to rise above their circumstances.
Lost no more.
