Winter Woollies for Children

The Matthew 25 Project, a safe house supporting abandoned and vulnerable children in Benoni, recently received a heartwarming donation of handmade winter woollies. This initiative was made possible through a partnership between Harcourts Blue and Eddy House’s Stitches knitting circle, combining the efforts of career women and devoted grandmothers to ensure the children stay warm this winter.

A Collaboration Woven with Love

On June 20, the volunteers visited the children’s home in Rynfield to hand over colourful blankets made by the Stitches knitting circle. The initiative is part of Harcourts Blue’s Donate to Create Initiative, which encourages members of the community to contribute their skills and passions for a good cause.

“When we launched this initiative we could not imagine the tremendous effect it would have on all of us,” said Harcourts Blue’s sales manager, Desiré McDonald.

“Our knitting circle gives us the opportunity to actively pursue our hobby while affording us the time to socialise with circle members who have become dear friends,” said Stitches member and Eddy House resident Sheila McClure.

“Whether knitting or crocheting, we are creating something with loving care. The process keeps our fingers agile, minds fresh and the hearts fuzzy in knowing that our creations, which have been lovingly stitched together, bring warmth and comfort to a child,” she added.

Bridging Generations Through Giving

The relators and grannies were deeply touched by the experience. “When we launched this initiative we could not imagine the tremendous effect it would have on all of us,” said Desiré McDonald, Sales Manager at Harcourts Blue.

“We have bridged the gap between grannies, whose families may be living abroad and children who otherwise would never have experienced receiving a delicately made blanket from a biological nana. The magic woven into each stitch and square is miraculous,” she explained.

Meeting the children and seeing their joyful reactions to the blankets reinforced the impact of the project. The smiles and excitement highlighted how simple acts of love and creativity can make a lasting difference in the lives of children in need.

Community Care in Action

The colourful woollies and blankets not only keep the children snug during the colder months but also symbolise community support, intergenerational connection, and compassion—values that the Matthew 25 Project promotes every day.

“The magic woven into each stitch and square is miraculous.”
